Congressional Republicans have introduced [H.R. 9237, the Take Care of America's Veterans Act](https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/9237), a 554-page package that’s made up of more than 60 bills addressing veterans' issues. This massive package, drafted by Republicans with no Democratic input, contains several popular pieces of legislation, but [veterans groups across the political spectrum have denounced it](https://www.vfw.org/media-and-events/latest-releases/archives/2026/6/vfw-strongly-opposes-disability-benefit-cuts-included-in-proposed-take-care-of-americas-veterans-act) due to ["poison pill" amendments](https://prospect.org/2026/06/18/veterans-va-health-care-republicans-take-care-americas-veterans-act-project-2025-trump/). The sweeping legislation includes the Major Richard Star Act, also known as the “wounded veteran tax”, which would allow 54,000 combat-injured veterans to receive their full retirement pay and disability compensation simultaneously. However, the Republican bill offsets the cost of this measure by [slashing benefits for an estimated 1.5 million veterans](https://www.military.com/veterans-groups-say-congress-new-benefits-package-would-shift-costs-to-15-million-future-veterans) suffering from common service-related conditions, and reducing future disability compensation by [nearly $60 billion over 10 years](https://www.afge.org/article/bill-meant-to-aid-veterans-instead-betrays-our-military-heroes-and-federal-caregivers). This kind of [cost-saving priority of veterans healthcare policy](https://prospect.org/2026/06/18/veterans-va-health-care-republicans-take-care-americas-veterans-act-project-2025-trump/) was also a key element of Project 2025. Congress should oppose the disability compensation funding offsets in the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act and pass the Major Richard Star Act as a standalone bill. This nation's veterans should not be pitted against one another in order to receive much-needed care and earned compensation. What to say when you call: Hi, my name is **[NAME]** and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose H.R. 9237, the Take Care of America's Veterans Act, unless the disability compensation funding provisions are removed. Providing much-needed care and earned benefits for one group of veterans should not be paid for by slashing the benefits of another. Thank you for your time and consideration. **IF LEAVING VOICEMAIL:** Please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied.
